Warm spring weather and a competitive spirit were in abundance this September for the Club’s annual Handicap Competition. Held over three weeks, members vied for the title of champion in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles competitions.
Members always love entering the handicap competition as it is a friendly comp that is possible for anyone to win. Every time a player/pair wins a game they start the next game in the negative (eg -15 v 0). In the doubles, strong and weak players are paired together to even the competition. Creating a level playing field results in long, close matches that challenge even the fittest and determined players.
In the singles competitions, Jenny Harvey defeated Raelene Booth in the Women’s Final after an epic battle at the baseline.
The Men’s Final was a family affair with David Knox defeating his brother-in-law Jamie Hubble to win the title.
The next week, the doubles competitions were also closely fought. In the Women’s Final, Raelene Booth and Jo Crawford were victorious over Melissa Francis and Margaret Miller. The Men’s title went to Richard Harris and Tony Evans who beat Pat James and David Knox in another close tiebreaker.
In the final week, male and female members joined forces for the mixed doubles competition. At the end of the day, the ‘Pam Sam’ combo was just too good. Pamela Newport and Sam Maxwell defeated Joanne Crawford and David Knox in an exciting tiebreaker.
As a fitting end to a wonderful competition, members enjoyed a well-deserved drink and a BBQ put on by Club Captains David Knox and Jenny Harvey.
Three cheers to our fabulous Club Captains!!!
